AI Advisory
Committee

The AI committee advises the provost and VP-IT on current and future needs for AI technologies and AI skill development, to ensure Rice is leading in responsible AI use for its teaching, research, and operations. This includes providing guidance on the investment and implementation of AI, as well as insights into the future of the changing AI landscape. To do so, the AI committee engages with a diverse cross-section of the Rice community.

AI is a junior collaborator; humans remain fully accountable for all final outputs and decisions.

5. Autonomy & Diversity of Choice

We promote AI literacy without forcing the use of specific commercial platforms.

6. Equity & Access

Academic and operational success should never depend on your ability to pay for premium “frontier” software.

7. Environmental Stewardship

When selecting AI tools and infrastructure, Rice should weigh environmental costs alongside performance and ensure they do not undermine Rice’s 2030 carbon neutrality commitment.

In Spring 2026, four subcommittees, composed of committee members and additional leaders, faculty and staff from across the university, were formed to address specific needs or challenges related to the impact of AI on Rice. Below are the four subcommittees and their focus area.

Assessment

To examine how AI is affecting academic integrity at Rice and what assessment practices may need to change in response.

Education for Faculty, Staff, &
Students

To recommend how Rice can move faculty, staff, and students from initial curiosity about AI toward confident, responsible use — through training, resources, and programming, with attention to student well-being and institutional risk.

Software and Services

To determine what AI tools and services Rice should provide to students, staff, and faculty, and how new tools should be evaluated before deployment.
